Getting engaged to be married or have a civil partnership is a wonderful thing, although planning the ceremony can become very stressful. Bringing up the topic of a prenuptial agreement, or prenup can be off-putting, as this is effectively preparing for a divorce.
This is a very negative preconception, and it ignores all of the positive things that can come about from arranging a prenup. Very often, a prenup is designed to protect existing family assets that you may wish to pass on to your children, or in the event of a second marriage later in life when one or both partners have accumulated wealth. When it comes to prenups – just like with insurance – it’s far better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.
