Just to outline the legal process of a divorce, if you are the person who starts the divorce process you are referred to as The Petitioner.  Your spouse will be The Respondent and to obtain a divorce you, first of all, have to have been married for a least one year and secondly, you have to prove to the Court that your marriage has broken down irretrievably.

When we have completed and submitted all the legal papers to the Court they will be considered by the Judge who may, or may not, raise questions.  We will take care of all these proceedings on your behalf and once the Judge is satisfied with the contents of the divorce papers we have submitted, he or she will fix a date for pronouncement of the decree nisi of the divorce.

Now we realise that all this legal procedure does sound extremely complex and will appear very daunting to most people.  Don’t worry.
