Foster children to stay til 21

It has been announced that from next year there will be a legal duty on local authorities to allow children in care to stay in their foster placements until the age of 21 rather than having to leave at 18.

This is likely to have huge benefits for the young people concerned, particularly when they want to enter higher education.

The government has announced that it will be making £40m available over the next three years to finance the scheme.

This announcement has received widespread support from charities working with children in care and has been described as the most significant reform for children in care in a generation.”
