At Higgins Miller we are obviously involved with many single parents and although generally attitudes have moved on there still appears to be some stigma attached to being a single parent.
Whilst we believe that it is best for a child to have a positive relationship with both parents following a the breakdown of a marriage or parents’ relationship we recognise that this is not always possible for a variety of reasons. In those circumstances we fell that it is important for single parents to be given praise and encouragement for the difficult job that they are doing and the stereotype of someone who relies on handouts and is lazy is often very far from the truth.
Perhaps the most sucessful single parent in Britain is JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter books. An article in the Telegraph this week reveals that JK comes from a long line of single mothers and that she is very proud of her status as a single parent. JK Rowling is also the president of the charity Gingerbread, which was set up to provide support to single parents.
