Extra money for adoption charities

Adoption charities such as Bernardos are to be given extra money by the Department for Education from later this year. The aim of the boost is to try to speed up the process and reduce the number of children in care who are waiting for an adoptive placements.

The Government says it is concerned that the process of adoption is too slow and complex and can put prospective adopters off whilst there are still over 4,000 children waiting for placements.

The Government has already allocated an extra £50 million to local authorities to help them find prospective adopters. Today’s move signals a bigger role for charities in the process of placement of children.
