New domestic abuse guidelines

Prosecutors are to be issued with new guidelines for dealing with cases of domestic abuse concerning younger and older victims.

In relation to younger victims the guidelines will direct prosecutors to consider the impact of social networking and aspects of gang culture. It will be noted that “some teenagers may not even consider themselves victims of domestic abuse.”

As regards older people it will be pointed out that people’s experiences of domestic abuse will change as they get older, particularly because they may become dependent on their abuser and may feel isolated as a result. It is also noted that evidence does not point towards abuse decreasing with age.
