As of yesterday it is now possible to convert a civil partnership into a marriage.
Earlier this year the Marriage Act made same sex marriage legal for the first time but there was no way for those couples who already had a civil partnership to convert that into a marriage.
Now the law has been changed again meaning that those wanting to convert their civil partnerships can do so either via a simple administrative procedure at a registry office or alternatively by holding a conversion ceremony.
The couple will receive a backdated marriage certificate to the date of the civil partnership ceremony.
