Quickie Divorces are Unrealistic

The Law Society has warned that Celebrity divorces, often referred to as “quickie divorces” are giving ordinary people unrealistic expectations about the process.

It has been reported over the weekend that Nigella Lawson and Charles Saatchi have been granted such a divorce.

However, on closer reading it appears that they have only in fact been granted the first of the two decrees within the divorce, the decree nisi. They will now have to wait for a further six weeks and one day before applying for the decree absolute.

Their divorce is also very different to most people’s as a result of the extreme wealth of both parties. There appears to be no claim by either against the other’s finances but of course this is not possible for most divorcing couples.

Now that legal aid is not widely available for divorce many couples are likely to try to represent themselves or use divorce websites. This can often lead to delay as mistakes can be made due to lack of knowledge which will take extra time to rectify.
